Evaluation: Who would be the audience for your media product?

I believe that my thriller would appeal for people between 15 and 60 years old and the age rating would be 15 according to the BBFC. The age rating would definitely rule out any audience under 15.

From this we can tell that my predicted age range fits the information shown above. I could also tell that from my questionnaire that I did for my peers to fill in, there were a few that liked thrillers. This is why the age range is so wide spread.

Due to the age rating, the lowest age of the consumer would be 15. This is because if I intended to actually make this, the film would have scenes of strong violence and minimal drug use, which is part of what the BBFC states that makes a 15 rating.
Only people in the UK would primarily watch my film due to the distribution company. Maybe a few other English speaking countries may have it pop up now and again. In terms of ethnic groups, there is no particular theme of religion so all could be interested depending on their personal tastes. It wouldn’t particularly be a long movie so people who had a tight schedule might appeal to it as they could watch it quickly before bed or whilst eating dinner. It’s a psychological thriller so it would be for a more mature and heavy thinking audience and would appeal to the adequate thinking. This film is intended (if actually made) to have a plot twist at the end and so this gives it the ability to be re-watchable, as they would be able to watch it to look for clues they missed. People who enjoy things like murder mysteries and other puzzling things will like to give this film a watch. People who are into the gritty, dark, cold coloured sort of movies will also like this movie. The typical grimy “British look” is a very popular convention and the movie stays true to this.

Evaluation: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
What kind of film is my film?
My film has a run down, gritty style to it. My thriller is intended to be a psychological thriller. This gives me enough criteria to find my distributor.
An appropriate distributor
The first film I thought that was like mine was This is England (Shane Meadows, 2008) due to the grimy "British" look and it has at a low budget of 1.5 million (estimated: IMDB). This is England was distributed by optimum releasing, a company created in 1999.
Optimum Releasing has created other British films like Attack the Block (Joe Cornish, 2011). This was also gritty like my film.
"Optimum Releasing has consistently supported emerging filmmaking talent" http://press.optimumreleasing.net/about.php
Quote from the website of Optimum Releasing. This means it's perfect for a film like mine.
Although Optimum Releasing were bought by Studio Canal. Studio Canal still support small film makers.

This is my final Piece, Expendable.

Film company titles

I think that this title is effective as the deep red colour adds to the creepiness of the thriller and red also illustrates danger.

The black and white llama is effective because it is plain and simple and doesn't disract you too much from the actual piece

Questionnaire

This is the two paged questionnaire that I got people to fill in. They are all in the teenage age group. This is a flaw as different age groups have different opinions. They include a mixture of open and closed questions.

Here is a graph (above) that shows (as expected) that tension is very important when creating a thriller.
More results show that other conventions include the fact that the storyline is not too farfetched and that there is are indepth characters. I can show this through costume and lighting when that character is on screen to activate a certain mood in the audience when a certain character is on screen. Others state that there must be an antagonist and a protagonist to help the story move foward. This is very important but seeing as this is the start of the film I only want to show an antagonist.

Draft edit

I feel like this went well for a draft. I haven't however used any costume and I should try next time hiding the identity of the character to create mystery and add more tension as the music reveals that there is something wrong already. The music works well with the piece overall. I could of experimented with visual effects to assign representations of the on screen character. The kitchen has to be more cluttered to again show that there is something strange about the situation. The baby monitor needs to actually be working and the final shots are far too dark. At the end I'm planning on adding a montage of close up moving objects and various actions over the titles. I'm happy with the idea that there are now credits in the very first scene as (in my opinion) this would ruin the tension.
